Cranial Osteopathy
Cranial osteopathy (also known as craniosacral therapy) is a gentle and specialised form of osteopathic treatment that focuses on relieving tension and supporting the body’s natural balance. It uses light, precise touch to release strains within the body, particularly around the head, spine and nervous system. Despite its gentle nature, it can be highly effective and is suitable for people of all ages, including babies and children.
How it works Cranial osteopathy works with the body’s subtle natural rhythms and movements. When the body is under stress — whether from injury, illness or everyday life — these rhythms can become restricted. Using refined palpation skills, osteopaths assess areas of tension and apply gentle techniques to help restore balance, improve function and support the body’s ability to heal itself.
Cranial osteopathy for babies and children Cranial osteopathy is particularly well suited to babies and young children. Birth can place significant physical stress on a baby’s body, especially around the head, neck and spine. While many babies adapt well, some may retain areas of tension following a difficult, assisted or very fast birth. Treatment is extremely gentle and aims to release these strains, helping babies feel more comfortable and settled. It may be helpful for unsettled or irritable babies, feeding or latching difficulties, sleep disturbances, colic or digestive discomfort, and general tension following birth.
What to expect from treatment Treatment is calm, gentle and non-invasive. Very light pressure is applied to specific areas to support the body’s natural release of tension. Many babies and children feel relaxed after treatment, often sleeping well. Occasionally, there may be a short period of restlessness, which usually settles within 24–48 hours.
A whole-body approach Cranial osteopathy looks at the body as a whole, rather than focusing on one specific symptom. The aim is to support overall health, movement and development by addressing underlying patterns of tension. Where appropriate, we will always work alongside your GP or other healthcare professionals and ensure referral if needed.
Our approach Our practitioners are trained in cranial osteopathic techniques and experienced in working with babies, children and adults. We aim to provide prompt appointments and a clear, supportive approach from your first consultation.
