Dry Needling
Dry needling is a modern, evidence-based technique used to treat muscle pain and dysfunction. It involves the use of very fine needles inserted into specific areas of tight or irritated muscle, known as trigger points, to help release tension and improve movement.
At Back on Track Healthcare, dry needling is used as an adjunct to osteopathic treatment where appropriate. It is particularly helpful for addressing persistent muscle tightness, headaches and certain nerve-related symptoms that may not fully respond to hands-on techniques alone.
Dry needling works by helping to reduce muscle spasm, improve blood flow and influence how the body processes pain. It forms part of a wider treatment approach, often combined with manual therapy, rehabilitation exercises and advice to support recovery.
Although it uses similar needles, dry needling is different from acupuncture. It is based on Western medical principles and focuses specifically on the musculoskeletal system, rather than traditional energy pathways.
Treatment is tailored to your individual needs following a full assessment. If suitable, your osteopath may recommend dry needling as part of your care plan, but it is always your choice and alternative treatment options are available.
Dry needling is generally safe when performed by a trained practitioner. Some people may experience mild soreness or slight bruising after treatment, but this usually settles quickly.
It can be used to help manage a wide range of conditions, including neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, sciatica, headaches, sports injuries and general muscle tension.
Most people tolerate dry needling well, and many notice a reduction in pain and improved movement following treatment. As with all therapies, best results are achieved when combined with the exercises and advice provided by your practitioner.
